Formation of Susquehanna Personnel Management Association was like many dreams, just that, until a few concerned human resource executives in the area finally decided that this type of organization was needed and gathered together to do something about it.

On May 27, 1969, the first positive action was started by correspondence from a Danville member of the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA) to the executive vice president of that organization requesting the particulars pertaining to forma-tion of a chapter.

By August 26, 1969, letters had gone out to a handful of local human resource executives calling for an exploratory meeting. This actually became the pre-organization meeting.

This was followed by an organizational meeting on Oct. 14, 1969, at which time an ASPA representative outlined the formation of a chapter and photographic and editorial headlines were made in a local newspaper.

The election of officers and directors was held Nov. 10, 1969, and the decision was made that Susquehanna Personnel Management Association become a chapter of ASPA. A quote from the newly elected president to ASPA on Nov. 13, 1969, was as follows:

“I am proud to inform you that the Susquehanna Personnel Management Association has been organized and has accepted the proposal that we become a chapter of the American Society for Personnel Administration.”

On January 16, 1970, the petition for charter membership of 43 members was accepted by ASPA’s board of directors at its New Orleans meeting and a telegram acknowledging the acceptance was read to the organization by the president at the January meeting.

In 1993 the organization underwent changes. Bylaws were updated and the organization’s name was changed from Susquehanna Personnel Management Association (SPMA) to Susquehanna Human Resource Management Association (SHRMA).

 This organization has grown and today finds itself with approximately 100 members from the Central Pennsylvania Region and growing.
