8:00 a.m. Program
The Politics of Effective Leadership

Jared Detter, Leadership Development Consultant, Bartell & Bartell, Ltd.

Description/Course Overview:

Our national culture is beset with conflict and polarization.  Whether it’s the news, election cycles, police brutality, vaccines, or abortion, everyone is picking sides, and they’re doing so in ways that make dialog and progress very difficult.  To make matters worse, public figures (politicians and news media) often work to fan the flames of polarization.  My talk discusses the deep psychological roots of polarization and how we can not only overcome this tendency in ourselves but be effective leaders in a culture of polarization.  I will cover topics that include how our brain sets us up for polarization, the role of bias in our psychological journey away from civility, ways to recognize polarization in yourself, as well as steps to take to lead effectively in a way that builds bridges, rather than destroys them.

Learning/Course Objectives:

Through attending this session, participants will learn:

    • The deep, psychological roots of polarization, particularly how the brain operates to reduce objectivity.
    • The role bias plays in destroying civility, most notably how people effectively protect themselves against learning when polarized.
    • How to recognize when you are getting pulled into polarization and the impact that polarization has on others.
    • Ways to lead that will build bridges, rather than burn them in a polarized environment.

    Presenter:
