Microaggression and Implicit Bias

Michael Dixon, Founder, Owner & Lead Consultant

Quincy Michael Consulting Group LLC

Description/Course Overview:

We spend a majority of the week in our respective work environments and these places have numerous opportunities for meaningful interaction and dialogue. Sometimes, that interaction and dialogue may intentionally or unintentionally convey or communicate messages that may be interpreted as hostile, derogatory, or negative. This session will focus on ways to defining and identifying those behaviors, but more importantly formulating ways to address behaviors encountered.

Learning/Course Objectives:

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define the terms “microaggression” and “implicit bias."
  • Identify at least two different types of microaggressions and two types of bias.
  • Compose an effective strategy to address microaggressions and bias in real time.

Presenter:

Michael Dixon is the founder, owner, and lead consultant for Quincy Michael Consulting Group, LLC, a group that is focused on being a thought-partner and providing guidance about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education, not-for-profit, and corporations.  Dixon joined Susquehanna University in November 2019 as the Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer and works closely with the president and leaders across campus to develop and implement initiatives supporting the university’s inclusion and diversity efforts.
